0 pinkie pie {a finish}

Hello, I am so over the moon happy to share my finished Pinkie Pie quilt with you today. Isn't she the sweetest?

It all started in July when I volunteered to make my middle daughter a pixelated Pinkie Pie quilt. You see, I came across this needlepoint pattern for Pinkie Pie and thought how fun it would be to turn each and every one of these cross stitches into a square. Piece of cake, right?

Well, not exactly. Somehow, only after I was deep in the whole process of cutting and piecing all those 1" squares did I realize that I needed to piece 4410 !!! of them to make this quilt.

I will not lie. This was a tedious kind of quilting and I got bored with the monotonous piecing a lot. But, I'm extremely glad that I persevered (thanks to many reproaches of my daughter who let me know in no uncertain terms that it was my idea to make this quilt and she was just going along with my "brilliant-ness").

Once the quilt top was finally finished, I had no idea how to quilt it, what color of the thread to use, how to make sure that quilting will not overwhelm and overtake the whole picture ??? At the end I decided to go with what I know best - straight line quilting and I used 50wt white thread all over the quilt. I think it worked out pretty well and I love little puffy squares that formed after the washing.

I used this pretty light gray chevron print for the binding. I think it frames Pinkie Pie so well and adds just the right finishing touch. I got in the habit of hand stitching my bindings lately but I decided to machine stitch this one on. One of the reasons was that I really, really wanted to be finished with this quilt and, as we all know, machine binding is sooo much faster than doing it by hand.

Also, this quilt is going to live on my daughter's bed (which means it will spend a lot of time being crumpled on the floor) which in turn means it will need to be washed a lot, and thus machine stitched binding was definitely a better option. Win - win :) much quicker, plus a lot more durable.

Finished size of the quilt is about 65" x 70" and I used Kona white, bright pink, camelia pink, candy pink, and medium pink to make this giant version of Pinkie Pie.

This was definitely the most time consuming quilt I have ever made and piecing it drove me insane at times, but my daughter loves it and that's what counts.

I don't think any other words can possibly describe my latest attempt at making a quilt for my middle daughter other than complete and utter madness. Here's what I've been up to.

I took this needlework pattern for Pinkie Pie and decided to turn it into a quilt. I must have been high on lots chocolate and caffeine when I promised my daughter this quilt and decided to turn each and every one of those 4410 cross stitches into a 1" finished square.

Fun, isn't it? I'm looking at the whole experience as one big precision sewing lesson (trying to see the glass full here :)

Each block is a 10" square. So far I have 10 block finished, only about 34 more blocks to go, yay me!!! And yes, I decided to piece even the blocks that are completely white. I simply could not bring myself to slap a large 10" square of white fabric next to all those teeny tiny color blocks.

OK, off I go. Lots more piecing to be done.
